After 2,805 Days… Benzema Scores For France Again
After 2,085 days, Karim Benzema scored for France again. His brace at the Puskas Arena against Portugal allowed France to earn a 2-2 draw with the European champions.
The last time Benzema had scored for his country ahead of Wednesday was on October 8, 2015, in a 4-0 win over Armenia in Nice, when he scored twice in just two minutes.
After that game, Benzema played just twice more for France in 2015 before a six-year absence from the national team. Ahead of Euro 2020, he played in friendlies against Wales – missing a penalty – and Bulgaria.
Once the European Championship got underway, the No.9 played against Germany and Hungary but didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet until the third and final group game.
Benzema’s goals made him the oldest France player to score more than once at a World Cup or European Championship at his age of 33 years and 186 days old, surpassing Zinedine Zidane. His double against England in 2004 came at 31 years and 356 days.
His goals have come five years, eight months and 15 days after his last France goals. In 86 appearances, he has 29 goals.
