The Edo State Government has stepped up vaccination of the elderly, frontline workers and other eligible members of the public with the Oxford-AstraZeneca, reaching about 29,994 persons in the first 17 days of the vaccination exercise.

Edo State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this during the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Obi said the over 29,900 persons vaccinated, represent 75 percent of the state’s 40,540 target population for the first phase of the vaccination exercise.

The Incident Manager, who lamented poor compliance with guidelines to contain the pandemic in the state, urged residents to continue to adhere to the state’s preventive protocols to stop the spread of the virus and avoid reinfection.

Reassuring the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents, Obi said the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has continued to intensify measures to contain the spread of the virus across all communities in the state.

Noting that the state was winning the war against the second wave of the pandemic, he said Edo is recording a steady rise in COVID-19 recoveries and a drastic drop in active cases as well as case positivity fatality.

According to him, “Edo State, in the last 24 hours, collected 278 samples, with no new cases confirmed. We also recorded three recoveries and eight active cases that are being managed at various isolation and treatment centres within the state.”

Obi, while noting that the state has not recorded any COVID-19 related death in the last17 days, urged citizens with COVID-19 symptoms to contact the Edo Emergency Operation Centre on this toll-free number: 08003625000, for assistance.
