Atletico Madrid Brush Alaves Aside

Atletico Madrid earned an impressive 4-0 win against high-flying Alaves at Mendizorroza on Saturday evening to maintain their slim LaLiga Santander title hopes afloat.

Alaves had lost just once at home in the league all season before Atletico came to town but the second defeat was on the cards after just eleven minutes.

Saul Niguez opened the scoring after just five minutes before a wonder goal from Diego Costa made it 2-0 for the visitors shortly after.

Diego Simeone started the match with a front three of Diego Costa, Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata though the Brazilian-born striker would come off at half time due to a muscular problem.

Morata made it 3-0 just before the hour-mark before Thomas Lemar, who replaced Costa at the break, completed the rout on 84 minutes.

The victory leaves Atletico Madrid ten points behind leaders Barcelona after their 2-0 derby win over Espnayol earlier in the day.
