Ailing Minority Leader, Federal House of Representatives and Member representing Isoko Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Leo Okuweh, has been likened to the deceased American former President, Theodore Roosevelt, who contested and won American Presidency for the fourth time on a wheelchair and died 11 weeks into his fourth term.

Mr. Nelson Egware, the coordinator of the Lawmaker’s Media Team, made the comparism while dismissing insinuations that the fourth term Lawmaker who is jostling for a fifth term is physically impaired and unfit to run.
While tagging Ogor as the ‘Roosevelt of Isoko’, Egware argued that though Theodore Franklin Roosevelt was confined to a wheelchair, it never limited his performances as the President of America, citing his (Roosevelt’s) speech that moved the US Congress into approving the War on Japan as a case study.

“Franklin Roosevelt was the only President of the United States of America who served for four terms from his wheelchair. His Wheelchair didn’t diminish the capacity in him. It didn’t affect his mind, neither did his disabilities came as a challenge between Japan and the future of the United States of America”, he said.
“Like every mortal incumbent, he (Hon. Leo Ogor) fell ill and has been receiving medical attention. This is the point we must take away. This temporary setback didn’t affect his intellectual capacity to defend the interest of the people of Isoko. He is physically and not intellectually incapacitated, Egware said.

However, the statement has raised dusts as many respondents argued that there are too many qualified people in Isoko to replace Ogor, and as such,  Isoko cannot afford to send a sick man who should be busy attending to his health, to the National Assembly. An Abuja-based Lawyer, Mr. Zino Ugboma, queried Egware if he was aware of how Roosevelt’s reign ended. Going through memory lane, Ugboma said considering the fact that the ailment succeeded in killing Roosevelt thereby bringing his fourth term to an abrupt end, is  enough reason to note that the American’s precedence is a bad one.

“I however just want to find out; are you aware that President Roosevelt did not complete his fourth tenure? Are you aware that due to the weight of his duties on his failing health, he died less than three months into his fourth tenure? Is this your prayers for our leader?, Ugboma retorted.
Egware’s comment has come under heavy criticisms by Isoko people with many stating that a look at the dignitaries presently jostling for the position from all the political parties has suggested that Isoko is too blessed with eminently qualities young men and women to send a physically impaired fourth-timer to the House of Representatives for the fifth time.

Respondents have also argued that having spent 16yrears in the House, it is only fair for the Ogor to leave the stage for others to come with new ideas.

“Leo has been there for 4 tenures, I think its time for him to go. Maybe God is using this ailment to pass a message to him which he has refused to listen to. We don’t want a situation where we will have a representative that will always be abroad for treatment while Isoko is left unrepresented. Enough is enough. Let him go attend to his health”, a constituent who identified himself as Ewoma Odhegba, said.
