The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have announced that all 26 Portugal players, as well as the rest the national team’s coaching staff, have tested negative for COVID-19 after facing Spain on Friday.

Their announcement comes a day after Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets tested positive following his participation in the friendly game between the two teams at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Busquets’ positive test generated concern in the Portuguese camp, as Joao Cancelo acknowledged on Monday during a press conference ahead of their friendly against Israel on Wednesday.

“It is always something worrying because when we are in contact with people who are infected, we always think of the worst,” said Cancelo.

“I think this is a lottery, this virus is something that we can’t explain because anyone can get it.”

Back to training

The Portuguese players returned to training on Monday after having been given a day of rest, with the entire group getting together for the first time, as the Manchester City players were the last to join their Portugal teammates after featuring in the Champions League final.

Portugal host Israel in Lisbon on Wednesday, before travelling to Budapest on Thursday to participate in the 2020 European Championship.

Fernando Santos’ side are in Group F along with France, Germany and Hungary, whom they will face in their tournament opener on June 15.
