I was in Secondary school when the quest for the raison d’etre for the celebration of Valentine’s day hunted me and then I was forced into a research.

Valentine’s Day 14th February.
What is Valentine’s Day? St Valentine’s Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration. Every year on 14 February people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. Couples send Valentine’s Day cards and flowers and spend special time together to honour their love for each other.

The Early History of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. There are many stories about St Valentine and over time these stories grew into the legend we know today.

At the time of Valentine’s life, many Romans were converting to Christianity, but Emperor Claudius II was a pagan and created strict laws about what Christians were allowed to do. Claudius believed that Roman soldiers should be completely devoted to Rome and therefore passed a law preventing them from marrying. St Valentine began to marry these soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies and this was the beginning of his reputation for believing in the importance of love.

Eventually, Valentine was found out and jailed for his crimes against Claudius. While imprisoned, Valentine cared for his fellow prisoners and also his jailor’s blind daughter. Legend has it that Valentine cured the girl’s blindness and that his final act before being executed was to write her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine’. Valentine was executed on 14 February in the year 270.

Why celebrating immorality in the disguise of Lovers day?
I am a staunch fan of Naija Fm 102.7, however, I have been so dissatisfied with the speciality they attribute to Valentine’s Day, in fact, they now have special programmes with special packages for Valentine’s Day. This menace is rooted in every fabric of our society, Pupils, students are now wrongly oriented to exchange gifts between the opposite sex on Valentine’s Day. What is the society indirectly inculcating into these poor children? I am not saying exchange of gifts is wrong, NO! Whether between the same sex or opposite, exchange of gifts is beautiful, it is one of the things that build love and unity between or among people. My guys know am a very loving chap, my girlfriend can testify to this even behind me. What is disheartening is the speciality given to Valentine’s Day, must gifts only be exchanged on Valentine’s Day? What happens to other beautiful days like Sundays and Fridays? Must society continue to specify a day for the celebration of love? As a matter of fact, what is usually celebrated on Valentine’s Day is immorality, the peak of indecency, a day for hotels, motels and Condoms sellers to make more money. A day a lot of young girls loses their virginity, day decency is lost by many.

It is most disturbing that the society still holds Valentine’s Day, Lovers day so-called in high esteem at this point that the question of paternity is at the front roll in the society. DNA Test has disclosed many secrets in many homes, DNA Test has sent many purported fathers to a place they never contemplated they would be.

In the Article of Kenneth Ikonne Esq. Titled My saddest ever day in Court, wherein he narrated his bitter experience while representing his friend and client in a Paternity Matter at the High Court Ikeja judicial division. He maintained that it is only best imagined that the only child you have trained, nurtured, who warmly call you Daddy every time, who even looks like you, who you pay huge bills for in one of the best schools on Victoria Island, Lagos for 13 whole years is not your daughter. She belongs to another man, another man your wife has at different times told you is her Friend or even her cousin. When the unimaginable happened, the DNA Test result was unsealed by the court Registrar on the instruction of the judge, even the judge shed tears and could not continue proceeding when the real father was disclosed. A judge of the Delta State High Court, Anthony Okorodas, has said DNA Tests have recently revealed that he is not the biological father of three children from his marriage with his former wife.

Who is now deceiving who? What are we celebrating on Valentine’s Day? I believe that its high time y stopped celebrating Valentine’s Day or Lovers day so-called, Only true and genuine love should be celebrated. And no date should be specified for such beautiful celebrations. Every day is a beautiful day only if we can think deep. Love should always be preached, Humanity should always be encouraged in our society.

It is on this note that I humbly submit that the loss of love, lost of humanity is what introduced banditry, Kidnapping, Boko haram, Raping and all forms of social vices.
