Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta announced several COVID-19 restrictions after a spike in infections in the country, the health ministry announced on Friday.

The restrictions included a ban on all forms of political gatherings for 30 days as of midnight.

The move comes after authorities recently announced that a third wave of the pandemic had hit the country.

On Friday, the East African country of almost 55 million people recorded two new COVID-19-related deaths and 750 new infections.

Over 1.3 million COVID-19 tests had been conducted across Kenya since March last year.

According to the ministry, the country has so far recorded 111,935 infections, 1,901 deaths, and 88,209 recoveries.

“All isolation facilities in the country must be maintained at a high state of preparedness through continuous capacity-building and provision of adequate protective gear for healthcare workers,” Kenyatta said.

“Public health measures, including washing of hands and physical/social distancing in all public places, will continue to be enforced,” Kenyatta was quoted as announcing in the ministry statement.

Kenyatta also announced that “a maximum of one-third of the capacity of places of worship will be allowed at each worship ceremony,” while attendees for weddings and funerals have been limited to 100 persons.
