In its efforts to ensure adequate healthcare for the aged in the state, the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has made provision for geriatric care as part of the health insurance scheme.

The Director-General (DG), Edo State Health Insurance Commission, Dr. Rock Amegor, in a chat with journalists, said the scheme is designed to reduce out-of-pocket spending for healthcare services in the state.

According to him, “The Enhanced plan of the scheme has higher benefits than other plans. For example, if you are a beneficiary under the enhanced plan, you will be entitled to home visits; nurses can come to your home to check your blood pressure and carry out other medical checkups. We usually recommend an enhanced plan for residents with aged families or parents living alone.”

He explained that the beneficiaries of the state health insurance scheme cut across the poor, individuals and groups in the formal and informal sectors and students.

“For the formal sector, the health insurance scheme covers civil servants and those under the employment of the state government, while the informal sector covers entrepreneurs, market women, owners of private facilities, artisans and hoteliers.

“We also have those in the private organised sectors such as banks and airline industries. There is a plan for students, which is going to commence at the beginning of the new school year. For students, the premium is charged into their school fees. We will go to their doorsteps and teach them how to use data to purchase health services such that there will be an improved outcome and reduced financial expenditures.”
