Manchester United Joins Title Race After 2-1 Win At Old Trafford

Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at Old Trafford to go joint-top of the Premier League, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot.

Anthony Martial gave the hosts the lead towards the end of the first half, before a wild few minutes around the hour mark saw Bertrand Traore equalise and then a penalty awarded for a Douglas Luiz challenge on Paul Pogba, with Fernandes firing in for the three points.

There were early chances for both sides, with saves made against Martial and John McGinn. Martial did get his goal five minutes before the break, though, heading in a Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross.

Aston Villa started the second period well and a goal was seemingly coming. It did when Traore was set up by Jack Grealish in the 57th minute.

It wasn’t level for long, though. Luiz brought down Paul Pogba in the box and, after a VAR review, Fernandes stepped up to fire United back in front from the spot with the 27th Premier League penalty since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival. No other team have had more.

Although Manchester United had further opportunities after re-taking the lead, they couldn’t get that third goal and this left the door open for the away side.

David de Gea had to make an excellent stop to deny Matty Cash in stoppage time, as United held on. They’ve now gone joint-top of the table as they sit on 33 points alongside Liverpool. Aston Villa, meanwhile, sit sixth.
