I Can’t Understand What Messi Is Doing In The Best Awards – Berbatov

Despite the fact there will be no Ballon d’Or for 2020, FIFA are moving forward with their annual ‘The Best‘ awards, yet Dimitar Berbatov has made clear that he can’t understand why Lionel Messi is being considered for the award.

Both the Argentine and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the finalists to take home the award, despite their respective clubs suffering big humiliations in European competition.

“I’m surprised that Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are among the finalists, I’m can’t understand why they should fill those positions,” Berbatov explained in his column for Betfair.

“Unfortunately, football is a business and behind the scenes there are agents, press, much more beyond the cameras and what we see. It’s a bit embarrassing.”

When pressed on who he believes would be a fairer candidate for the award, the former Bayer Leverkusen goalscorer spoke admiringly about Robert Lewandowski.

“The best player in 2020 should go to Lewandowski, and if it doesn’t then it’s clear we’ve seen a great injustice,” Berbatov added.

“I’m not clear on who should accompany Lewandowski, you know, what happens happens.

“As always, everyone is arguing about who the best players are, but this year it doesn’t matter because, whoever accompanies him, Lewandowski must win.”
