Former NFL player Justin Bannan has been found guilty of attempted murder and first-degree assault after shooting a woman in 2019.

In a bizarre incident Bannan, 42, told police that he was fleeing from the Russian mafia when he entered the treatment room of Ashley Marie in Colorado, before shooting her.

According USA Today, Bannan was carrying a twenty-dollar bill which had traces of cocaine when he was arrested.

The woman was rushed to hospital where she was treated for a fractured humerus.

Bannan was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2002 and went on to play for a raft of teams throughout his 12-year career – the Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions.

His defence lawyers argued that Bannan was suffering from paranoid thoughts at the time of the incident, which had been caused by concussions he’d had during his career.

The ex-defensive lineman’s lawyer Harvey Steinberg compared him to a gladiator.

“In Roman times, people would come cheer the gladiators. And they were great,” Steinberg said

“And then when they were done with them, as you know historically, they fed them to the lions.”

Prosecutors argued that Bannan was under the influence of drugs, but does not suffer from mental illness.

After eight hours of deliberation, the jury came to the guilty verdict. Bannan is due for sentencing in November and faces between 16 and 48 years in prison.
