Real Sociedad cruised to a 4-1 victory over Cadiz at the Reale Arena on Sunday, through braces from Alexander Isak and Mikel Oyarzabal.

However, the Basques were given a helping hand from Mateu Lahoz who was in charge of VAR, as he instructed the on-field referee to go to his monitor on three occasions in the first half.

The first goal came from the penalty spot, due to a handball from Alvaro Negredo that no one had seen or asked for Lahoz had seen something however, and advised referee Pizarro Gomez to award the spot kick.

Oyarzabal didn’t mind, and up he stepped to put La Real ahead on 26 minutes. Eight minutes later, he had a second, with Mikel Merino providing the assist.

Lahoz’s second intervention was to overturn a penalty awarded by Pizarro Gomez to Cadiz for an alleged foul by Igor Zubeldia.

The third input from the man on VAR arrived on the brink of half time, when Cadiz defender Marcos Mauro pulled back Oyarzabal. Pizarro gave a yellow, but Lahoz appeared again to advise his colleague to check the pitchside monitor, and a red was subsequently given.

The rout was completed by Alexander Isak, who helped himself to two second half goals which his performance merited.

Negredo pulled one back, but it was a mere consolation for the visitors.
