Premier League champions Liverpool suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday evening.

It was the second crazy result of the day in England after Manchester United were battered 6-1 by Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Villa’s new signing, Ollie Watkins, netted a first half hat-trick to give Dean Smith’s side a commanding 4-1 lead at the break in Birmingham.

For the opening goal Jack Grealish pounced a mistake by Adrian to set up the former Exeter and Brentford striker to tap in his first Premier League goal.

The 24-year-old netted his second midway through the first half, finding the top corner after another pass from Grealish.

The visitors got themselves back in the contest 10 minutes later when Mohamed Salah found the roof of the net.

Shortly afterwards, Villa retook their two-goal advantage, John McGinn’s volley from the edge of the box taking a deflection off Virgil van Dijk to wrongfoot Adrian in goal.

There was time before the break for Watkins to complete his hat-trick, nodding in Trezeguet’s cross from a freekick.

When most were expecting an attempt at a comeback from Liverpool, Villa added to their lead after half time, Ross Barkley finding the net with a deflected strike on his debut for the club.

After Salah pulled another one back, Grealish re-established the hosts’ four-goal lead and extended it with another strike to take the scoreline to 7-2.

This was Liverpool’s first defeat of their Premier League title defence as they sit in fifth place in the table after the first four fixtures.

Meanwhile, Villa continue their perfect start to the campaign, following their opening two wins over Sheffield United and Fulham.

The 7-2 win completes a day of shock results in the Premier League, with Jose Mourinho’s Spurs winning 6-1 at Manchester United and high-flying Leicester going down 3-0 at home to West Ham.
