A woman was killed after a shooting suspect ran into a Los Angeles Trader Joe’s store, took hostages and engaged in a three-hour standoff with police before the gunman surrendered, authorities said.

The woman who was shot was pulled out from the store by police as the situation was ongoing, and she was treated by Fire Department medics but did not survive, Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

The suspect, wanted for shooting his grandmother, was chased in her vehicle by police and he fired at officers during the pursuit, before crashing his vehicle near the popular grocery store and entering the business with as many as 50 people inside, Garcetti said.

The gunman took some people hostage, officials said. During the standoff people were released or escaped the building, and the suspect surrendered by asking police for handcuffs, putting them on, and then exiting the store with several other people at around 6:30 p.m., the mayor said.

The names of the suspect and the woman who was killed were not immediately released. “We are very early in this investigation,” Los Angeles police Chief Michel R. Moore said.
