The National Headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has facilitated a three week African Journalists Training to Egypt for Ms Josephine Omoda Agbonkhese of Vanguard Newspapers.

The lucky beneficiary was nominated by the Lagos Council through the assistance of the National President of NUJ and Federation of African Journalists, Comrade   Waheed Odusile to join other journalists across the continent for the 51th edition of Young African Journalists holding in the Egyptian capital, Cairo between April 21 and May 10, 2018.

The fellowship is an annual event organized by the Union of African Journalists (UAJ) in collaboration with training and media studies centre of the Egyptian Ministry of Media and Communications.

The fellowship, which began in 1992 has had no fewer than 1000 journalists as participants since it commenced.

At the send forth get together held on the 18th of April, 2018 at the premises of the Lagos NUJ secretariat located in Alausa, Ikeja, Chairman of the state’s council, Dr Qasim Akinreti urged the beneficiary to strive to be a worthy ambassador of the council of the NUJ during the fellowship.

Akinreti urged that Agbonkhese to make the best of the opportunity provided by the fellowship to improve on her skills as a professional, saying such would be the only fitting reward for nominating her for the prestigious award.

Commenting on the choice of the fellowship winner, Akinreti promised to ensure fairness and merit in the distribution of fellowship opportunities to members of the union, adding that the era of favouritism and bias in the selection of members for such opportunities are over.

“I have promised and I am determined that NUJ is one big family where opportunities should and will go round. In doing this, I have prevailed on the National leadership of the union to always route such opportunities through the council and not to give such out arbitrarily. When they bring them to us, we will look for members who are qualified to take part in such programmes. This is what we did in this case and I congratulate the winner who was duly nominated by her chapel.” Akinreti concluded.

The NUJ Chairman Lagos Council extends his appreciation to the FAJ and NUJ President, Comrade Waheed Odusile for the gesture given to the Lagos State Council.
