Former basketball player and NBA hero Rasual Butler and his wife, a singer who once appeared on American Idol, have been fatally injured in a traffic incident in Studio City, California.

The 38-year-old was draft in 2002 by Miami Heat and enjoyed a fine career at the top of the game.

TMZ say that he lost control of his Range Rover at 02:00am and crashed into a parking meter, then a wall before rolling the car.

His vehicle was the only one involved and it is believed that he may have been speeding before losing control of the car.

Butler was a member of the Hall of Fame of the university at NCAA in La Salle and retired in 2016, having played for Miami, New Orleans, LA Clippers, Chicago, Toronto, Indiana, Washington and San Antonio.

He played 13 seasons with 809 games, and 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds on average.

In 2011, Butler joined Gran Canaria for one season but he terminated his contract due to personal reasons and returned to the USA.

His wife, Leach LaBelle, was a singer who finished 12th in the third edition of American Idol in 2004.
