China will donate 300,000 doses of its coronavirus vaccine to UN peacekeeping forces, according to its ambassador to the world body.

“I informed the UN today that China will donate 300,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to UN peacekeepers. Protecting the health of the blue helmets to enable better performance is essential in maintaining peace and security. In supporting the UN, China is always there. Only together can we win,” Zhang Jun said on Twitter.

China’s State CouncilLor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the Security Council last month that Beijing will ship the doses to peacekeepers.

“This is a further step to make China’s vaccines a global public good, and also a demonstration of China’s firm and continuous support to the UN and multilateralism,” Zhang said in a letter to UN chief Antonio Guterres on Monday.

“China attaches great importance to the safety and security of peacekeepers, and supports early COVID-19 vaccination for UN peacekeepers to protect their health and help them better perform their duties. The Chinese Government will work closely with the UN Secretariat to make vaccines donated by China available to the UN peacekeepers at an early date,” said Zhang.

He added that China will continue to work in “solidarity with countries around the world to make unremitting efforts to win the final victory of the global fight against the pandemic.”

China has approved its four vaccines for a market rollout. Beijing is donating vaccines to 69 developing countries in urgent need and is exporting vaccines to 43 countries.

At least 60 countries have authorized the use of Chinese vaccines.
