Spain registered 17 fatalities related to coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the lowest daily toll since late August last year, the country’s Health Ministry said Friday.

Nearly 5,500 new cases were reported, bringing the total number to over 3.6 million, and the fatalities are so close to hitting 80,000.

Regarding the current average of infections in the country, the ministry data showed the figure continues to decrease as 124.3 cases per 100,000 people were registered in the last 14 days.

The occupancy rate of the intensive care units also decreased to 14.71% across the country.

Spain administered over 26.1 million doses of virus vaccines, while only 8.8 million people were fully vaccinated.

The country lifted its state of emergency on May 9, allowing more freedom of movement both within Spain and internationally.

Since December 2019, the pandemic has claimed over 3.51 million lives in 192 countries and regions, with more than 169.1 million cases reported worldwide, according to the US-based Johns Hopkins University.
