BEN TV Nigeria correspondence/representative, Mr Olufemi Oyewole, on Monday morning escaped death at his residence. The attack comes a few days after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Olufemi, a journalist with the United Kingdom-based television station, while describing his suffering in the hands of the assailants to the men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) that visited his residence noted that the assailants visited his house based on information gathered on him.

He said that the assailants have all information about him which includes his foreign trips, family and his several news reports.

“They arrived midnight, we were far asleep, the man woke me up with his gun, at the same time, I heard another voice on the other side of the bed telling my wife, Modupe, to get up gently and move towards my side,” Oyewole said.

His words: “The leader of the gang told me categorically that I worked in favour of the APC in the just concluded election, that my reports have critically shown that. Then I was hearing my kids screaming in their room, I already gave up and accepted my faith, I thought it was my end.”

“He told me that no reason to let me remain alive because if I’m alive, I will still have the mind to write another news story in the future. The other one asked my wife to stand up, he asked her where is our ATM cards, where are my wife’s pieces of jewellery, where do we keep our foreign currencies left from our last foreign trip, then I now knew they have information about me when they mentioned our last foreign trip.”

Confirming the event to journalists, the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Kenneth Nwosu, during a parade of robbery suspects today, said the police were already in the chase to apprehend other members of the gang that attacked the journalist.

“Our mission is to eradicate armed robbery attacks and killings in Lagos State, the arrested and paraded armed robbers will assist us in apprehending others who are at large and possibly lead us to those who attacked the residence of BEN TV journalist, Femi Oyewole ‘male’ ,” he said.
