Bayelsa Chief Judge Pardons 8 Awaiting Trial Inmates

The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Kate Abiri (CON) has granted pardon to eight Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATI) at Yeneagoa Prison in the state capital who were released immediately.

 

 

Justice Abiri pardoned the inmates while performing Jail Delivery Exercise to mark 2017/2018 Legal Year Ceremony.

 

 

The officer in charge of the Prison, Mr Jude Agboje (DCP) had presented over 100 carefully selected case files to the Chief Judge as a recommendation for the unconditional release.

 

 

After studying the cases and the merit of the requests, she granted pardon to the eight inmates.

 

 

The Controller of Prisons, Bayelsa State Command Mr Chiabua Chuks Victor Uche fsi commended the gesture of Justice Abiri under whom the judiciary in the state had ensured quick dispensation of justice and accelerated hearing of cases of awaiting trial inmates.

 

 

Mr. Uche observed that through robust and smooth cordial relationship with the judiciary and the executive arms of government in the state, the campaign for decongestion of prisons could be attained.

 

 

The gesture of granting pardon to awaiting trial inmates is aimed at decongesting prisons and ensuring that suspects do not stay much longer than necessary while on awaiting trial.

 

The prisons service in Bayelsa State has recorded remarkable changes and improvement since the assumption of office of the Controller of Prisons in the area of welfare services for prison officials and inmates.
