Luis Suarez Wants To Renew His Atletico Madrid Contract Beyond 2022
Strikers are judged by their goal tallies and Luis Suarez remains one of the most dangerous centre-forwards in world football, with five goals so far this season for Atletico Madrid. That makes him the club’s top scorer right now, even though they also have Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa, Joao Felix and Matheus Cunha in attack. Suarez also scored 21 last year as Atleti won LaLiga Santander.
Confident that he can keep performing at the highest level, Suarez would like to stay at Atletico Madrid beyond the summer of 2022. That’s when the two-year contract he signed after arriving from Barcelona is due to expire, but he hopes to stay at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano longer than that.
For now, Atletico Madrid want to wait and see how Suarez evolves physically over the coming months. They know he still has a natural instinct for scoring goals and they know that signing another No.9 in the 2022 summer market won’t be easy or cheap, but they want to wait for now to see how the 34-year-old’s body holds up over the course of 2021/22.
Simeone would back Luis Suarez
In any case, Suarez can count on the support of Diego Simeone. The Argentine was key in bringing the striker to the club and has always backed him, even when the player went through poor runs of form.
Given the Uruguayan’s age, Simeone will surely rotate him out of the line-up more this year than last year. Yet Suarez could remain useful to Los Colchoneros this season and even beyond.
Suarez and his international retirement
With Suarez determined to feature for his country at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he’d love to still be playing in LaLiga Santander in the months leading up to that tournament. He’d love if he could still play for Atletico Madrid.
