Manchester City Bounce Back From United Loss To Thrash Southampton

Spread the love

Manchester City comfortably beat Southampton 5-2 on Wednesday evening, swiftly putting their derby loss to Manchester United last weekend behind them.

Kevin De Bruyne scored the game’s first and last goals, while a Riyad Mahrez brace sandwiched Ilkay Gundogan’s strike for the hosts, with James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams netting for the Saints.

De Bruyne’s opener was cancelled out by Ward-Prowse from the penalty spot after an Aymeric Laporte foul.

City led at the break thanks to Mahrez before Gundogan and Mahrez again gave them breathing room within 10 minutes of the restart.

Adams’ goal made things interesting, reducing the deficit just a minute after Mahrez’s second goal, but De Bruyne had his own quick response to kill things off before the hour mark.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now 14 points clear of second-placed Manchester United, though they have played a game more than their cross-city rivals.
