The Hug Between Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema That Inspires Hope Amongst Real Madrid Fans

There was moment during Portugal’s game against France in the final match of the Euro 2020 group stage that made Real Madrid fans, who were watching the fixture on TV, break into a smile.

As referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz blew his whistle to mark the end of the first half, players of both teams headed to the tunnel for the interval when cameras caught Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema beaming from ear to ear as they spoke to one another.

The two players embraced on the pitch and this gesture has inspired hope amongst Real Madrid fans about a potential Ronaldo return to Los Blancos this summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the Bernabeu

After forcing his departure from Real Madrid to Juventus back in 2018, Ronaldo hadn’t returned to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to watch a game until the Clasico against Barcelona on March 1.

His presence in the stadium’s VIP boxes sparked rumours about whether the Portugal international could make a Real Madrid comeback in the summer of 2020.

But Ronaldo ended up staying at Juventus, where he failed to lead them to silverware in Serie A and the Champions League, despite netting 36 goals in 44 games across all competitions.

Zidane’s message to Ronaldo before Euro 2020

Asked in an interview by Sky Italia about whether Ronaldo could return to Real Madrid this summer, then-coach Zinedine Zidane didn’t rule it out.

“It could happen. We know him and I’ve had the good fortune to coach him,” said Zidane.

“He’s an impressive forward, we’ll see what happens in the future. He’s a Juventus player right now.”

In the meantime, however, Zidane has departed Real Madrid and been replaced by former Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti, who will be forced to make big decisions this summer. Ancelotti did, of course, work with Cristiano during his first spell in Madrid.

Following Ronaldo’s departure from Los Blancos, the team struggled in terms of scoring, despite Benzema stepping up and bagging 65 goals in LaLiga Santander in the last three seasons.

Now, it remains to be seen whether that hug between the two former teammates could mean something more than the fact that they maintain a great relationship.
