Liverpool Swat Arsenal Aside With Relative Ease

Liverpool have risen to second in the Premier League table after a 4-0 victory against Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Sadio Mane’s goal late in the first half saw the hosts go into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead, but three second-half goals from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Takumi Minamino ensured that Liverpool secured all three points.

Arsenal had Aaron Ramsdale to thank in the first half for keeping them in the game, but the Englishman was not helped out by his defence in the second half.

After a series of excellent first-half saves, Liverpool found the breakthrough from a set piece. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pinpoint free-kick from the right landed on the head of Mane, who had got between Gabriel and Takehiro Tomiyasu, and he guided the ball past Ramsdale.

Liverpool’s second came via a horrendous mistake by Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares. After being pressed, his loose pass went straight to Jota, who then showed great composure to sit down Ben White and Ramsdale before firing into the empty net.

Then, Liverpool shattered any hope Arsenal might have had of a comeback by scoring two goals in the space of four minutes through Salah and Minamino.

This 4-0 victory for Liverpool takes them up to second on 25 points, four behind leaders Chelsea, but Manchester City could jump above Jurgen Klopp’s side if they beat Everton on Sunday. Arsenal, meanwhile, see their 10-match unbeaten run come to an end, but they remain fifth in the table.
