Juan Mata Signs One-year Contract Extension At Manchester United

Spread the love

Whilst Juan Mata is now 33 years old and was an unused substitute on over 20 occasions during the 2020/21 season, the Spanish midfielder has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been in close contact with Mata for a number of weeks following the conclusion of the season, hoping to persuade him to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Manchester United announced the deal on Friday afternoon, and it’s far more likely that Mata has been retained for his influence on a young dressing room, rather than any expectations for him to contribute on the pitch.

Fans may worry that Mata’s presence will put up a roadblock to promising midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, although that will not be clear until the 2021/22 season is underway.

Mata’s Manchester United career has spanned 273 matches, in which he has scored 51 goals and won four trophies, including a League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.
