A prominent human right activist in the Niger Delta region, Ambassador Jude Ebitimi Ukori has stated that failure of the Federal Government to accept call for restructuring of the country for proper operation of true federalism, cause of rising insecurity.

He advised the federal government to yield to call for restructuring where the federating units would be allowed to control their resources.

Ukori in a chat with journalists in Warri on Sunday, said the current rise in insecurity and agitations for self rule are as a result of self actualization.

According to him, the people are yearning for self actualization because true federalism is not in operation, that was why they have been calling for restructuring, to allow the component units of the nation to take charge of their resources but the federal government has deliberately refused to adhere.

He lamented that the situation in the Niger Delta is worse as they have been treated like captives, adding that if they have their way, they will also call for self actualization by getting their own nation.

“So I will not fault the Igbos and Yorubas that have been calling for self rule because the level of nepotism and tribalism in Nigeria is beyond human comprehension. The federal system of government we are operating is no longer attainable.

“You can see the rate of insecurity in the country because the federal government have failed to provide the desired governance. The major function of a government is to provide security for its citizens but they have failed in this direction.

“That is why most of the people are yearning for self rule where they can guarantee their safety instead of relying on a federal force that have failed them. But the better we remain as one indivisible country, the stronger we will be, although that can only be when we agreed to restructure the country for the betterment of all.”, he said.
