Just In! Referendum: Barcelona Vice-President, Vilarrubi Resigns Over Las Palmas Match

Carles Vilarrubi has resigned from his role as Barcelona vice president following the decision for the club’s fixture against Las Palmas to go ahead.

The league match was in grave doubt of being cancelled following scenes of violence around the city as Catalans attempted to go to the polls in an unofficial independence referendum.

The club had requested that the game be called off, but it has gone ahead in an otherwise empty Camp Nou.

Over 100 people have reportedly been injured by the police around Catalunya over the course of Sunday, when may, including Barca defender Gerard Pique, offered their ballots.

Las Palmas inflamed the situation by announcing their intention to wear a Spanish flag on their shirts and the match was in doubt until shortly before kick-off, when it was announced that it would be played behind closed doors.

Barca are expected to give further details behind Vilarrubi’s decision to stand down on Monday.
