CONMEBOL Suspend March’s World Cup Qualifiers

CONMEBOL have officially postponed their World Cup qualifiers that were scheduled to take place during the March international break.

South American countries were due to play two qualifiers over the course of the break, but travel bans posed problems for players.

“The CONMBEOL committee has decided to suspend the two Qatar 2022 qualifying rounds scheduled for March,” CONMEBOL said in a statement.

“The decision is down to the impossibility of having all South American players available in a timely manner.

“FIFA will look into rescheduling the fixtures in coordination with CONMEBOL and its member associations.

“The different options for fulfilling the matches will be studied in due course.”

This decision is the result of a lengthy meeting between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez.

If the qualifiers had gone ahead, South America’s top countries may well have been without their top players due to coronavirus restrictions on travel from Europe.
