AC Milan’s quest for a first Serie A title in a decade looks all but over after a 1-0 defeat by Napoli at the Stadio San Siro on Sunday.

Matteo Politano’s goal in the 49th minute was enough for Gennaro Gattuso to inflict a loss on his former club.

The former Inter winger collected a pass from Piotr Zielinksi from beating Gianluigi Donnarumma with a driven shot low into the far corner.

Matters were made worse for Milan, who lost Ante Rebic to a red card in second half stoppage time after a late challenge on Elseid Hysaj.

The result leaves Milan now nine points behind Inter at the top of Serie A, following Antonio Conte’s side’s victory over Torino earlier on Sunday. The Rossoneri had harboured hopes of a first Italian title since 2011.

As for Napoli, the win takes them to within two points of fourth-place Atalanta in their pursuit of a Champions League spot.
