Samba’s Law Of Education By Tiamiyu Ibrahim

“Education is the best legacy”. This is a quote memorised by heart of any average child in this part of the world known as NIGERIA. Is this quote a verity or fallacy? Who will answer this BIG QUESTION?.

According to wikipedia, “Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits”.

This depicts vividly that education is not only centered around academia but also encompasses professionalism and moralism.

In my recent encounter with an educational course in school, I have been able to understand the underpinnings of education under three (3) domains, which are:

(1). Cognitive domain – of, relating to, being, or involving conscious intellectual activity (as thinking, reasoning, or remembering).

(2). Psychomotor domain – being related to skills acquisition or ability to perform activities other than in the cognitive realm only.

(3). Affective domain – being related to learning of appropriate moral behaviours.

But the major concern is, where is the required resources to become educated?

We are in a country where corruption has eaten deep into the affairs of those saddled with the responsibility of steering the nation’s vehicle of prosperity. The minimum wage of N18, 000 which is below $100 is nothing to write home about, The per capita income is so diminutive, the rich populace keep accumulating wealth while the poor ones live in penury, the private schools which are of high standards are restricted to the children from the rich homes due to the fat tuition fee.

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of majority of multinational companies and even small ones are now centered around beauty pageantry & fashion shows, musical contest and TV reality shows and have neglected educational scholarship, even the few that do so, end up not paying the promised rewards at stipulated time.

A country where nepotism and favouritism is the order of the day and those who invested in education and become successful will still be deprived of job opportunities as a result of being a common man.

“They tell us education is the best legacy yet they embezzle public funds meant for the masses.”

What is this legacy about?. “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past.”

What are we going to pass to the future generations?

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka is perceived as a great man, who came from an average family and eventually became GREAT in the cognitive domain. Other examples are Former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Human Rights Lawyer, late. Gani Fawehimi, e.t.c.

Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates is perceived as a great entrepreneur of our time and even as a drop out in his early life, he discovered greatness in the psychomotor domain. Other examples are Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, Chairman Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, e.t.c.

Aung san suu kyi, known as a superb personality and an inspirational being. She excelled in the affective domain. Other examples are Jay Feinberg, Lynn Henning,et.c.

They are all going to be remembered for greatness after their demise, because they all invested in Education which will result in the best Legacy.

This brought about the “Samba’s Law of Education” which states that :-

=> “As more and more amount of an individuals investment (I) is allocated to education, it will get to a point where the returns on such investment will flow in either in form of economic benefits in the medium term (or short run) or as a legacy in the long run”

Note::- Investment is a variable which could be in form of Time (t), Money(m), and other resources (r).

=> An individual can not be referred to as educated, only if he is able to master the Cognitive, Psychomotor & Affective domain in an efficient and effective manner.

=> Educating a single individual is insignificant in numerical value but of tremendous impact on the economy of a nation at large.

So, take that decision of greatness today, invest in education irrespective of the order of the day in our country, the anomalies in politics of our epoch and I assure you of a profitable investment.

We can bring back that “Lagacy”. Free education can be a basic right of every child.
