Celta Vigo sent Atletico Madrid into the international break with plenty to think about, defeating Los Rojiblancos 2-0 at Balaidos on Saturday afternoon.
After a goalless front half of very few chances, Diego Godin slipped in the first minute of the second period and this mishap allowed his countryman Maxi Gomez a free run at Jan Oblak, with the Celta Vigo forward finishing well.
Before Diego Simeone‘s side could catch their breath and have a rethink, they were two goals down, with Iago Aspas getting into a good position to beat Stefan Savic to a cross and to head home.
Pione Sisto came close for the Galician outfit too, before Atleti were reduced to 10 men in the 69th minute when Savic was shown a second yellow card.
Simeone had taken off Gimenez instead of the Montenegrin just moments previously, even though the Uruguayan wasn’t the one who was booked, a decision which immediately backfired and left Atletico with a mountain to climb.
It could have been even tougher for the team from the capital, but they caught a break in the 70th minute when a Gustavo Cabral goal was reviewed by VAR and ruled out for a very slight offside.
Despite this let-off, Los Colchoneros couldn’t fight back for a point and finished the match without a single shot on target.
