Atletico Madrid, Moscow Ended In Frustrating Draw

Spread the love

Atletico Madrid’s long trip home from Russia will be a frustrating one as they failed to take three points from a game they dominated. Jose Maria Gimenez earned them an early lead away at Lokomotiv Moscow, but a penalty for a Hector Herrera handball allowed Aleksei Miranchuk to equalise for the 1-1 final scoreline.

Throughout the game, Atleti created chances and Joao Felix had a good early sight of goal with a header he couldn’t steer on target, before the back-from-injury Saul tested Guilherme. The visitors from Spain did get a go-ahead goal just after that in the 18th minute when Gimenez scored from a corner, turning in Herrera’s cross.

But, just five minutes later VAR called the referee to check a Herrera handball and this allowed Miranchuk to equalise from the spot. From there to the end of the game, Los Rojiblancos attacked and attacked. Before the break, Angel Correa hit the crossbar to show Lokomotiv Moscow that Atleti intended to retake their lead.

After the half time pause, there were chances for Luis Suarez, Joao Felix, Renan Lodi and Koke, the best of which was Koke’s as his header hit the woodwork again. But, it wasn’t to be for Diego Simeone’s men as they drew 1-1 to a Lokomotiv Moscow side whose only shot on target was their penalty.
