A middle-aged woman, her children, and other motorists, escaped death yesterday, in a multiple accident around Toyota bus stop, inward Apapa, Lagos.

The accident, which occurred around 11:30am, involved nine vehicles and was caused by potholes dotting the axis, which has become a nightmare to motorists.

The Guardian learnt that the affected vehicles-a container-laden truck, with registration number BDG 480 XC; Toyota Highlander Jeep-JJ 30 CL; a Sienna car-KRD-818 EU; and a Volkswagen commercial bus-MUS 601 XP, popularly called Danfo, among others, ran into one another due to the bad spot under the fly over.

One of the survivors, who is the owner of the Toyota Highlander SUV, Peter Adami, said: “This accident happened because of these potholes, when we got to the spot, the Danfo was hit by the truck coming behind us and the Danfo hit my car, which resulted to this accident. Six vehicles were badly damaged, while the other three just had minor scratches. My friend got injured on his leg, but the woman in the Danfo was not that lucky, as she sustained serious injury and has been rushed to the hospital, alongside her children by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). The Danfo driver, who was unconscious, was taken away.

A policeman from the Aswani Police Division, who refused to mention his name, said the station received a distress call and immediately rushed to the scene to save the situation.

LASEMA officials and the Nigeria police were on hand to manage traffic.
