According to El MundoLuka Modric has been handed a 1.2 million euros fine by for tax avoidance in 2012, the year he signed for Real Madrid.

That year, the Croat filed his taxes in the United Kingdom, where he was a Tottenham Hotspur player until September, but the Spanish tax office understands that he should have done so in Spain despite having only played for Real Madrid for four months.

Modric still has an ongoing legal dispute with the tax authorities and in total has already been told to pay 2.1 million euros, although he has appealed that decision.
