Belgium Thrash Scotland In Hampden Park Friendly

It was a happy return to Scotland for former Motherwell player Roberto Martinez, as his Belgium side thrashed Alex McLeish‘s men 4-0 in their first match since taking third place at the World Cup.

While Scotland competed well in the first half and threatened to break through the Belgian back line of three on a few occasions, they went into the interval trailing 1-0 after Mousa Dembele picked John McGinn‘s pocket in a dangerous area to start a move which led to a Romelu Lukaku tap-in in the 28th minute.

Belgium then flexed their superior muscle in the second half, starting with a powerful left-footed Eden Hazard strike inside the first minute of the restart.

Just six more minutes into the second period and it was 3-0, as Charlie Mulgrewpassed straight to Dembele, who launched another move, with Michy Batshuayi the beneficiary this time.

Ryan Jack was the next Scot to be robbed, as his error on the hour mark allowed Batshuayi a second of the evening.

With a four-goal lead, a relaxed Belgium did concede a couple of late chances, but Thibaut Courtois was able to deny both Ryan Fraser and Steven Naismith to keep a clean sheet… just as Keylor Navas did in Scotland‘s last home match.
