At least four people have been killed and several wounded after shooting broke out Tuesday evening at the Christmas market in central Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament.

The local prefecture said in a statement that four people had been killed and 12 wounded in the shooting, which began around 8pm. Seven of the injured were seriously hurt, prefecture officials said.

“Around 8pm, an armed individual entered the perimeter of the Christmas market,” the prefecture said in a statement. “The individual opened fire, injuring several people.”

The French Interior Ministry asked people in the city center to seek shelter inside or evacuate the area.

The gunman had been identified but was still at large, local officials said, warning residents to avoid the area surrounding the main police station, which local news accounts said is adjacent to a Christmas market.

According to prefecture officials, the gunman was flagged on fiché S, the French terrorism watch list. He is a 29-year-old Strasbourg resident, Le Point reported.

As of Tuesday night, French Interior Ministry warned residents to remain indoors during the “serious security incident.”
