Despite the fact the regular Ballon d’Or awards aren’t running in 2020, there has been an update to the Dream Team Ballon d’Or project, with the shortlist of forwards having been announced.

Monday saw the release of a list of potential candidates which included some of the biggest names in footballing history, with Lionel Messi, George Best and Stanley Matthews standing out as the frontrunners for the position on the right wing.

France Football magazine released the list and continue to have the aim of creating a historic XI which celebrates the achievements of some of the finest footballers ever known.

In accordance with the format of the voting process, France Football have split the forward line up into three areas: left, centre and right.

In each of those categories there are 10 players who make the final shortlist.

Right: Beckham, Jairzinho, Best, Keegan, Eto’o, Matthews, Figo, Messi, Garrincha, Robben

Left: Blokhine, Rivaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rivelino, Dzajic, Ronaldinho, Giggs, Rummenigge, Henry, Stoichkov

Centre: Bergkamp, Gerd Muller, Cruyff, Romario, Dalglish, Ronaldo Nazario, Eusebio, Van Basten, Kocsis, George Weah

Interestingly, there is not a single Spanish player selected among the forwards, even though we have seen players like Gento, David Villa and Raul all produced through the Spanish system.

The ideal XI will be revealed on December 17 after all the votes have been counting, thus giving France Football a way to replace their usual Ballon d’Or ceremony and project.
