Former Barcelona forward Rivaldo has advised his fellow Brazilian Neymar to leave Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid, in an interview published by German daily Bild on Wednesday.

Rivaldo said that if Neymar wants to win the Ballon d’Or, awarded by governing body FIFA to the world’s best player, “he should play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Rivaldo added: “At Paris Saint-Germain, with new coach Thomas Tuchel in charge, he will never be declared the best player in the world.”

The 46-year-old Brazilian, who played in Spain for Barcelona from 1997 until 2002, said Neymar switching to Real Madrid would be an “important change”.

Spanish state television channel TVE reported on Monday that Real Madrid had made a 310-million-euro (360-million-dollar) bid for Neymar.

But Real Madrid issued a statement denying the story. The 26-year-old Brazilian has scored two goals so far in Russia and will play against Belgium in Kazan on Friday.
