Journalists all over Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Thursday staged a nationwide peaceful protest simultaneously to protest the unlawful harassment of its members.

In Lagos, the protest which took off from the union’s secretariat was led by the State Chairman of the NUJ, Dr. Qasim Akinreti who on behalf of members, delivered letters to the Lagos State House of Assembly and the office of the Governor of Lagos.

Speaking shortly after, Akinreti lamented the incessant harassment, intimidation, and sometimes killing of Nigerian journalists across the country, calling on government across all levels to do something to stem the tide.

The Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the NUJ also called for synergy between the media and security agencies in order to foster a stronger working relationship.

It would be recalled that a journalist; Jones Abiri who had been detained for two years without trial by the Department of State Security (DSS), was recently released after fellow journalists and human right groups launched a massive campaign against his continued incarceration.
