Manchester City’s Four-match Champions League Losing Streak Is An English Record

They may have won the Premier League with 100 points, 106 goals and 32 goals, but Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City haven’t lived up to expectations in the Champions League.

The English champions lost 2-1 at home to Lyon on Wednesday night, their fourth consecutive loss in the tournament after also falling to defeat in the second leg of their last 16 match against Basel last year and in both legs of their quarter-final against Liverpool.

This four-match losing streak is an unwanted record, as no English side had ever lost four Champions League fixtures in a row.

City’s last four Champions League games

  1. City 1-2 Basel (last 16 return leg, 2017/18)
  2. Liverpool 3-0 City (quarter-final first leg, 2017/18)
  3. City 1-2 Liverpool (quarter-final return leg, 2017/18)
  4. City 1-2 Lyon (groups, 2018/19)

“We know that in this competition that some weeks it doesn’t happen, but I don’t think that’s an excuse for the result,” Mikel Artera, the assistant standing in for the suspended Guardiola on Wednesday night, said after the most recent setback.

The pressure is now on the Citizens, as they can’t afford any more setbacks against Shakhtar or Hoffenheim if they want to escape Group F and progress in the competition.
