…Van Dirk, Oxlade-Chamberlain also doubtful
Liverpool have been dealt a massive blow with the news that Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are both out of the Champions League clash against Barcelona. The match holds today at the Anfield.
Not only do the Reds trail 0-3 from the first leg at the Nou Camp, but they must overcome the deficit without two of their key attackers.
It will be left to Sadio Mane to shoulder the goal scoring burden, as the Reds hope to salvage something from what could end up a trophyless season.
“It is concussion and that means he will not even be allowed to play,” Klopp said during yesterday’s pre-Barcelona press conference on Salah.
“He feels okay but that is not good enough from a medical point of view. He is desperate.”
Klopp also spoke about Firmino’s unavailability.
“Two of the world’s best strikers are not available tomorrow night and we have to score four goals to go through – that doesn’t make life easier,” Klopp added
Divock Origi, the substitute who scored the late winner at Newcastle on Saturday, is set to start alongside Daniel Sturridge and regular Sadio Mane up front.
Virgil van Dijk missed full training yesterday, instead undergoing an individual session, due to an ongoing foot problem.
It is currently unknown if the Dutchman, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who also failed to meet up with the rest of the squad in front of the cameras, will feature versus Barca.
Midfielders Naby Keita, groin, and Adam Lallana, muscle, will not play again this season.
Klopp said of Salah and Firmino: “Both are not available for tomorrow.”
And speaking about Salah he added: “He is desperate, but we cannot do it. It is a concussion and that means he will not even be allowed to play. He feels OK but that is not good enough from a medical point of view.”
The approach we will take is that we try to win the game, if that makes sense. You only can deal with it step by step. We don’t have to score three in the first 10 minutes.
“The last five minutes are enough to score three if it is still 0-0. Let’s give it a try with all we have. That is what we have always done and we will do again.”
