Heimir Hallgrimsson announced that he has stepped down as Iceland coach and will return to his previous job as a dentist.

The 51-year-old was in charge of Iceland at Euro 2016 along with this year’s World Cup.

Despite the fact that his contract was coming to an end after the Russia tournament, Hallgrimsson had left the door open to stay on.

“Actually, there is no better job in the world than the national coach of Iceland and it would be difficult for me to leave the team,” he said some weeks ago.

“Firstly I will go on vacation and then we’ll sit down and talk about what’s going to happen.”

Iceland came into the spotlight after qualifying for the Euros in France, where they knocked out England in the round of 16.
