Atletico Madrid were left both cursing and thanking VAR at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday as Diego Simeone‘s side secured all three points.
Los Colchoneros thought they had taken the lead early on as Koke slotted the ball past Oier Olazabal, only for VAR to call the play back for a foul by Rodri.
In the second half, they had more luck as Thomas Partey‘s cross was halted by Nikola Vukcevic‘s sliding arm in the box.
That saw a penalty awarded and Antoine Griezmann stepped up to make it six goals in five games, without any other Atleti player scoring in any of them, as he gave the hosts the lead.
The result puts Atletico just two points off league leaders Barcelona, who face Eibar at the Camp Nou on Sunday evening.
