French Referee Suspended Until Further Notice Over Controversial Performance

Following his controversial performance as referee of Sunday evening’s clash between Nantes and Paris Saint-Germain, Tony Chapron has been suspended and will not officiate again until further notice.

In a bizarre incident, Chapron showed Diego Carlos a red card after the Nantes player collided with him whilst the ball was in play.

To the naked eye the collision looked entirely accidental, yet Chapron then aimed a kick at the defender before dismissing him from the pitch.

The French official had been due to take charge of Wednesday’s fixture between Angers and ESTAC Troyes, which will now not be the case.

Following the final whistle, the referee made reference to the aforementioned incident in his match report, he made clear that after reviewing the images he felt he had made an error with Carlos having fallen into him involuntarily.

The committee will meet in the coming days to discuss the issue and decide on an appropriate course of action.

Chapron debuted in international competitions in 2007 and had previously declared the 2017/18 season to be his last as a referee, should he be given a lengthy suspension then it could well be the case that he has refereed his last match.
