Roger Federer reached the French Open quarter-finals for the 12th time on Sunday, becoming the oldest man in 28 years to make the last-eight of a Slam while defending champion Rafael Nadal racked up his 90th win at Roland Garros as he stormed into the quarter-finals for the 13th time.

Later, former champion Stan Wawrinka downed Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in the longest match of this year’s French Open to set up a quarter-final clash with Federer.

Wawrinka sealed a stunning 7-6 (8/6), 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 victory with a magnificent winner from yards behind the baseline after five hours and nine minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

The 37-year-old Federer eased past Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 and will face either close friend and Swiss compatriot Stan Wawrinka for a semi-final spot.

Nadal, bidding for a 12th title at the tournament, swept past Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova raced into her first Grand Slam quarter-final at the French Open on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing of Latvian 12th seed Anastasija Sevastova.

British No 1 Johanna Konta continued her comfortable progress through the draw by seeing off Croatia’s Donna Vekic in straight sets to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final since Wimbledon in 2017. The 26th seed overpowered Vekic 6-2, 6-4 to set up a last-eight tie with either last year’s runner-up Sloane Stephens.

American seventh seed Sloane Stephens reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the second successive year with a 6-4, 6-3 win over 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza.
