Flood Takes Over Lagos, Slows Traffic

It appears there is no end in sight to the misery befalling motorists plying Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos, as different portions of this very important road are either impassable, or are heavily flooded during downpours.

In fact, aggrieved motorists are of the view that the much-talked about efforts put in by the Federal Government, as well as, steps taken by the state government to remedy the situation have failed to yield expected results.

One of such spots, which have been a thorn in the flesh of motorists, is the Toyota-Airport Road Flyover axis, which is dotted with potholes and the very poor drainage around the area keeps it heavily flooded whenever it rains.

For instance, in the last two days, several cars and commercial buses have suffered engine failure/damage and burst tyres when they plunge into flooded road, unaware of the depth of the ditches.

Matters are made worse at this spot as rain water from Toyota Bus Stop and Charity Bus Stop find their way there, as there is no drainage at these two bus stops.

A motorist who spoke with The Guardian, expressed disappointment that the situation around that spot has been allowed to deteriorate over time, without adequate attention from concerned authorities.

He blamed the flood on the poor drainage there as well as, the embankment anchoring the wire mesh, which is meant to discourage pedestrians from crossing the expressway.

Another motorist, Tolu Adeniyi equally called on the government to expedite action on the flood situation there saying immediate investigation was needed to ascertain why the flood was getting worse.

“I pass through this road regularly, and I can tell you for sure that the volume of water here never used to be this bad.

But things just took a turn for the worse in the last few months. If not addressed now, it would soon be worst.
