Espanyol‘s faint hopes of finishing in a European place were boosted with a 2-1 win over Alaves at Cornella on Saturday.

The three points takes them to within five points of sixth place, with most of their competitors still to play in LaLiga Santander this weekend.

A first senior goal for Adria Pedrosa gave the hosts a half-time lead before Victor Laguardia‘s own goal doubled their lead shortly after the restart.

Los Periquitos‘ impressive display grinded to a halt after Jonathan Calleri‘s 56th-minute strike that brought Alaves back into the game.

The visitors launched numerous long balls into the penalty area and came close through Diego Rolan and Wakaso Mubarak in the latter stages.

However, Espanyol managed to hold on to the victory and continue their dream of qualifying for the Europa League next season.

Meanwhile, Alaves have now gone four games without a win in LaLiga Santanderand are seeing their chances of clinching an unlikely European place fading after such a promising start to the season.
